Wildhaven Tour
Last Wednesday noon I stopped on Highway 18, below the hairpin. Some other cars had stopped, and one was parked in four-lane traffic. There was a red-tailed hawk standing dazed on the road, in serious danger of being run over. We called Wildhaven. They advised that the best thing to do was to move the bird off the pavement, and release him. So, I edged up to the critter, wrapped a sweatshirt around him, and gently picked him up. He didn't struggle or seem alarmed, just looked at me. He was a little scruffy, but still a grand raptor, the proud cousin of an eagle. His head and legs appeared to be in good condition. I set him down in tall grass and shrubs where he could hide and gather his senses. He spread his wings, after getting his feet back on the ground, and I could see that his wings were in good condition too. We considered taking him to a shelter, and would have if he were injured. But if he has any chance of survival in the wild, he would want us to do what we did. I checked back in a few days, and thankfully, he had left.

Anyway, Wildhaven invited us for a tour. Please join us at the 1 pm tour this Saturday, July 30.
Their website is here. Reservations are required, call (909) 337-7389. Call again if canceling. The tour costs $10/adult, $5 under age 9. Pay for your tickets on arrival, at the gift shop. Bring water, camera, and a jacket if it might cool down. Assemble by 12:45, as the tour starts promptly at 1:00 pm. There is only one tour per week.

For those who wish, meet for lunch at the Cedar Glen Inn, at 11:30 am. It's at 28942 Hook Creek Road, about a block from Highway 173, and easy to find. Our member Koko volunteers at Wildhaven, and will lead a caravan at around 12:30.

If you are traveling to Wildhaven alone, then print the travel directions, and call (909) 337-7389 if lost. A Google map is here. Take 173 to Cedar Glen and turn onto Hook Creek Road. There is a gas station at the corner. Take Hook Creek Road 1.4 miles to Pineridge. Turn left on Pineridge Drive. Then take the second left – Pine. Part of the route is on dirt. Follow a paved road to the main gate of Wildhaven. Before the gate, take the paved driveway on the right up to a parking lot. Cross the lot, and look for the gift shop at a little wood building.

See you there!
